Arrival and Parking

Upon arriving in Comares, we recommend parking your vehicle in the parking lot next to the Puerta de Málaga, as many of the village streets are narrow or pedestrian. Remember that Comares is a small village that can be easily explored in a few hours.

Tourist Information at the Tourism Office

Before exploring the municipality, visit the Comares Tourism Office, located in the Town Hall building. Here you will find detailed information about the municipality and its surroundings. Don’t hesitate to consult the friendly and knowledgeable staff for recommendations on points of interest and available activities.

Routes through Comares

If you wish to discover Comares in a more comprehensive way, we recommend joining one of the routes organized by the municipality. These outings, which take place on Thursdays and Fridays at 12:00 pm, will allow you to explore the most prominent tourist points of Comares. The price is €5 per person and children up to 12 years old have free access. The departures are from the Plaza Balcón de la Axarquía.

Follow the ceramic footprints

As you walk through the picturesque streets of Comares, you will notice ceramic footprints on the ground. These footprints will guide you to the most important tourist points in the village. Follow the trail and discover the hidden charms of Comares.

The Plaza Balcón de la Axarquía

The Plaza Balcón de la Axarquía is the heart of Comares. From this natural viewpoint, you can enjoy stunning views of the Axarquía Valley, the Montes de Málaga, the Sierra Tejeda, and much more. An open and free space that will allow you to appreciate the beauty of the region.

The Puerta de Málaga

The Puerta de Málaga was the main entrance to the past of the Plaza de la Villa. This historic place witnessed the handover of Comares to the Christian forces. Look closely at the walls of the gate and marvel at its history. You will find shields and commemorative plaques that tell the story of this emblematic site.

The Calle del Perdón

The Calle del Perdón witnessed a significant event in the history of Comares: the mass baptism of thirty Morisco families who decided to stay in the village. From that moment on, the street was called Calle del Perdón. Walk down this historic street and admire its unique charm.

Hisn Comarix

The Hisn Comarix is a tile where a general view of the fortress and its citadel is depicted until the end of the 15th century. This place was a strong and famous square for its powerful governors, who, along with those of Malaga and Guadix, challenged the Kings of Granada. The Hisn Comarix used to be a powerful and rebellious village, whose value was recognized by the most prominent kings. Admire this historical representation and immerse yourself in the rich heritage of Comares.

The Arab Arches

Throughout the historic center of Comares, you will find the famous Arab Arches. These architectural structures were built during the time of the town’s greatest splendor, under the Caliphate of Cordoba. Using materials and the Mudejar artistic style, these arches are a testament to the history and Arab influence in the region. Enjoy their beauty and marvel at their unique architecture.

The Castle Baluarte La Tahona

The Castle Baluarte La Tahona shows the remains of the old fortress of Arab origin. Today, only two of the towers and part of the defensive wall are preserved. Located at the highest part of Comares, next to the municipal cemetery, this place will provide you with incredible panoramic views of the Vélez River Valley and the Mediterranean Coast. Don’t forget to bring your camera and capture the beauty of this historic site.

The Camino de la Aguada

On a tile located on the Camino de la Aguada, the importance of water in the life of Comares is narrated. Throughout history, water has been a vital resource for the village, and its storage has always been a constant concern. In the past, women would go down to the spring with pitchers at their hips, jumping from stone to stone and slowly returning the same way. This tile is a tribute to that tradition and to the value of water in Comares.

The Viewpoints: Castillo, Sur El Castillo and Turrión

Comares has several viewpoints that will allow you to enjoy stunning views. The Castillo Viewpoint offers a panoramic view of the population center of Comares, while the Sur El Castillo Viewpoint provides spectacular views of the Montes de Málaga and the Sierra Tejeda. You can’t miss the Turrión Viewpoint, from where you can contemplate the Puerta de Málaga, the Axarquía Valley, and much more. These viewpoints are open spaces with free access so you can admire the natural beauty of the region.

Monumento Fiestero

In the Plaza de los Verdiales you will find the Monumento Fiestero, a life-size sculpture representing a Comares resident playing the tambourine. Here, the annual meeting of Pandas de Verdiales, a traditional cultural event of the area, is celebrated. Enjoy this outdoor space and immerse yourself in the popular culture of Comares.

Interpretation Center of the Villa

If you wish to learn more about the history and heritage of Comares, visit the Interpretation Center of the Villa. This visitor center houses exhibitions that will allow you to discover the cultural and architectural richness of the municipality.

Other sites and interesting facts

The Church of Our Lady of the Incarnation, the remains of Omar Ben Hafsun and the Mazmúllar Plateau and Cistern are just a few more examples of the historical and cultural richness of Comares. For adrenaline lovers, there is a via ferrata that will take your breath away.

Hiking routes

According to information provided by the Comares Tourism Office, nature enthusiasts can enjoy various outdoor activities in the area, such as hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Among the most notable routes are:

  • Fuente Gorda Route: This 3 km route is ideal for beginners, as it has a low difficulty level and can be completed in approximately one hour. This was the route we took and from which the photos come. It‘s really simple.
  • El Lavadero Route: With a distance of 5 km, this route presents a low to medium difficulty level and can be completed in 2 and a half hours.
  • La Teja Route: This 14 km route has a low to medium difficulty level and can be completed in 6 hours.
  • La Mesa de Mazmúllar Route: With a distance of 12 km, this route presents a medium difficulty level and can be completed in 5 hours.
  • Buena Vista Route: This is the most challenging route, with a distance of 26 km and a high difficulty level. It can be completed in 10 hours.

And of course, during your visit, make sure to delight in the local cuisine, which includes dishes such as goat, ajo colorao, potato stew, and gazpacho, all accompanied by the wines of Comares.

We had lunch at the Bar La Plaza, where we enjoyed a delicious plate of paella they made that day for €6.
