Malaga with Children – Best Things to Do

Málaga has been recognized by UNICEF as a Child-Friendly City. This distinction, which recognizes the city’s effort for the rights of children, is also noticeable in the wide range of cultural and leisure activities available for them.

One of the last centers that has been incorporated into the network of museums in Malaga is the Museum of Imagination , a planned space for children in which they will find visual illusions, games with lights and shadows and where they will feel like characters in fairytales. And remember, it is essential to take a camera with you. Entrance is free for children under 7 years old.

Also, the main museums of Malaga have workshops and activities designed for children, especially during weekends, although they also have very varied activities during all holiday periods throughout the year (White Week, Holy Week, Summer and Christmas).

The Picasso Museum offers weekend guided tours for families, in which adults can see the permanent collection and the terraces of its headquarters of the Palacio de Buenavista -normally closed to the public- while children visit the different rooms and participate in an art studio. Registration is required and the activity is designed mainly for children from 4 to 10 years old.

Picasso’s Birthplace Museum has free educational workshops for children aged 5 to 12 years in two hours every Saturday. To participate you have to register and show up half an hour before at the museum reception.

The educational program of the Center Pompidou Málaga includes visits on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays at 11.30 am, designed for the whole family, in which some of its pieces can not only be seen, but also touched and heard.Reservations can be made by email or the same day of the visit at the reception of the center. In addition, at various times of the year there are free workshops for all ages.

The Collection of the Russian Museum is also designed for children and offers free activities, with prior reservation, Family Saturdays, at 11.30, so that adults and children from 5 to 12 years old can get to know the museum in a fun way.In addition, for Russian-speaking tourists, on the last Saturday of every month, at 4 pm, there are family workshops in Russian, also free and with prior reservation.

The Interactive Museum of Music, MIMMA , one of whose slogans is ‘Please touch’, offers free admission to children under 6 years of age accompanied by adults.Every Saturday and Sunday the museum organizes musical tales, as well as music therapy and opera workshops, among many other activities. Reservations are required.

The Alborania Museum of the Aula del Mar , at the beginning of Pier One, in the Port, is another one of the educational centers designed especially for children, with a good number of children’s workshops to learn about the marine fauna and flora, to become veterinarians for a day or discover the treasures on the beach.Reservations are required.

And for those who like science and experimentation, they can’t miss the Principia Science Center , with concerted guided tours and interactive modules for children to learn about how the world works, from the basics of chemistry to observation of the stars.

Malaga also has outdoor places that children will love. Thus, the largest playground in Malaga, inspired by the game of basketball, is located in the neighborhood of Pedregalejo, in Manuel Díaz Millán square , where buses and trams from Malaga were kept in the past, which is why the plaza has a streetcar withdrawn from circulation in 1961 and restored a few years ago.

In the Litoral or November 25 Park , as it is known by both names, the last one in memory of the International Day against Gender Violence, in the West zone of the city, there is another original playground with a large hill and a couple of long slides, plus other fun activities for children.

The West Park , finally, is the most magnificent in Malaga and has playgrounds, fantasy sculptures and a small zoo. If the weather is fine, you can finish your visit with a walk along the beach, a few meters from this green area.
